Marango is the Costa Rican name for Moringa Oleifera, a fast-growing, drought-resistant tree native to the southern foothills of the Himalayas in northwestern India, and widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical areas where its young seed pods and leaves are used as vegetables. It can also be used for water purification and hand washing and is sometimes used in herbal medicine.
The young seed pods, known as ‘drumsticks’, are particularly high in Vitamin C and are also a good source of dietary fiber, potassium, magnesium and manganese. Among other things, they are a culinary vegetable commonly used in soups and curries.
The long drumsticks are often cut into shorter lengths. The distinctive triangle that forms the Marango logo comes from the cross-section of the young Marango seed pods.
